You may be asking yourself “what is my home decor style?”. With so many styles being showcased in interior design media these days, even for me, an interior designer, I still get stuck on this question!
Luckily, for you, I’ve created a list of the 10 most current and popular home decor styles and questions that you can ask yourself to determine exactly what is your unique and personal home decor style is.
There are hundreds of different home decor styles and I cannot possibly go through them all. Home decor styles are always evolving; year to year and decade through the decade. What was considered “traditional” a decade ago is maybe not what “traditional” is now.
My list of the 10 most current and popular interior designs styles:
1. Organic Modern
Organic modern is a very popular home decor style during this trend cycle. This home decor style is distinguished by its neutral colours, organic shapes, and earthy accessories. Haha, seriously, this style is like a Scandinavian spa mixed with a California summer. It’s very chic and can be very moody (which is another trend we are seeing this cycle). Overall, it’s very calming and serene. Read more about the Organic Modern style.
2. Modern Farmhouse
Modern farmhouse is a home decor style that is absolutely lovely if you have a big home with a white picket fence out in tim-buck-two or at least, you’d like to feel that way. When you think of modern farmhouse think country but not sweet-home-Alabama country. The modern farmhouse decor style nods to a subtle country style. So think of; rustic elements, wood, and natural materials but with an overall modern and up-to-date feel. This style often incorporates muted colours inspired by the outdoors so think of; pale blue, sage green, and soft yellow.
3. Transitional
Transitional is a home decor style that many agree with as it’s not sooo traditional and not sooo contemporary. This style is a happy in-between. Often times I describe it as one of the classic styles. As it’s not a style that comes in and out of the trend cycle. So if you’re someone who doesn’t want to redecorate every 10 years, this may be a style for you to consider. The transitional style is all about the balance of elements.
Often times in transitional spaces you see the same elements as you would see in traditional spaces. Such as wainscotting, crown moulding, and dramatic draperies. But the difference is in transitional spaces the patterns in the fabrics tend to be less busy and more subtle. The furniture is not as detailed as traditional furniture but it is certainly more ornate than contemporary furniture.
4. Traditional
The traditional home decor style is not one that considers less to be more. This style is all about the details, details, and yes, MORE details. This home decor style is all about ornate finishings, feminine patterns, and decorating maximally. When many think of traditional they think of “dated”. Traditional interiors can be dated but they don’t have to be. With the right accessories and with small updates through the years, traditional interiors remain timeless.
5. Contemporary
The contemporary home decor style is all about what’s HOT and IN at the moment. It’s very trendy and can tend to challenge the traditional rules of interior design. I love contemporary interiors as it gives me an opportunity to think outside the box. I can indulge in whatever the hottest interior design trend is at the moment. Daring and distinctive elements can identify this style. Such as; funky light fixtures, unique wallpaper, contemporary artwork, and high-contrast elements (think of black and white). It’s all about using materials and fixtures in new ways.
Check out this contemporary dining room I designed. I decided to use fireplace candles as centrepieces. And yes, I did 2 chandeliers over the dining table with 2 centrepieces. It is all about what’s new, up and coming, and what’s different.
6. Grandmillennial
I would describe the grandmillennial home decor style as “chic grandma”. Think of your grandmother’s house if she was hip and with the times. Haha, well, not exactly. But in essence, the style is mixing the old in with the new. So it does have a charm like no other. This style is one that became more popular within the last couple of years as TikTok made it a trend.
I personally love this style, it’s fun and timeless. This home decor style allows you to create a completely unique interior. This style encourages mixing vintage furniture with modern furniture. So, if you can, steal some furniture from your grandma.
7. Japandi
Created in Japan, the japandi home decor style is a soft, serene interior design style. It takes traditional elements of Japanese interior design and remixes them with a modern Scandinavian touch. I had the experience to stay in interiors that were decorated in the japandi style when I visited Japan. It is quite an enjoyable home decor style as it is minimal and tranquil. This is a perfect home decor style if you want to feel relaxed and feel as if you’ve escaped to a luxurious hotel in Tokyo.
8. Industrial
The Industrial home decor style is masculine, rustic, and rugged (this can also describe my ideal man). This home decor style is a popular style among men (as mentioned, it is a masculine style) and is a popular loft style. What identifies this home decor style is its use of raw materials and exposed elements. Often times you will see the electrical in the ceiling along with the HVAC exposed and even exposed plumbing fixtures. Overall this home decor style gives a very undressed look.
9. Eclectic
The eclectic home decor style is really fun and funky. The point of the eclectic style is that it utilizes different styles of furniture and decor in one space. Doing this creates a mismatched, whimsical, and unique look. Eclectic spaces tend to be maximal in their decor and also very bold and vibrant. If the eclectic home decor was a person, they would be your crazy aunt who wears bright pink blouses and posts about angels on Facebook.
10. Mid-Century Modern
The mid-century modern home decor style has really been a popular style for quite a while now. This home decor style is a blast from the past! As the name suggests, the furniture and decor are inspired by the 1940s-1960s. In this home decor style, we see mid-tone woods, greens, retro artwork, and simplistic modern shapes. The retailers West Elm and Structube have really popularized this home decor style. These retailers make it accessible and easy to achieve this style in any home.
So, now we have determined the 10 most current and popular home decor styles. How can you determine your home decor style?
Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself to determine what home decor style may suit you best.
1. What is the character of my home/ space?
When it comes to decorating in a particular style, I always take into consideration the style of the home’s architecture. Because, if you don’t consider your home’s architecture when furnishing and decorating, you can end up with a mismatched home. If your home is super modern on the outside, it might be strange if all your living room furniture is traditional. Given these points, it’s best to determine the style of your home and allow for that style to narrow down your options when selecting your home decor style.
2. What is my fashion style?
As an interior designer, I can take a look at someone and narrow down what home decor styles they’d fancy. By looking at your fashion style or someone else’s, you can determine what a person is generally gravitated to.
Now imagine if I meet someone wearing a bright yellow shirt and blue pants. I’d think, this person is not scared of colours and probably likes really bold and loud interiors. This might come off judgmental (because it is), but it works. Now let’s say I meet someone whose wardrobe is super trendy, neutral and minimal. Well, I’d put my money on the fact that they like their home decor the same way.
So, take a look inside your closet. Are you more reserved? Do patterns tend to draw you in? Colours? What you find in your wardrobe can help you determine what elements you want to bring into your home.
3. How do I want to feel in my home/space?
The home decor style you pick will affect the way you feel in your space, it’s science. I can’t really explain the full science behind it but think of it this way…
Your husband takes you to a fancy hotel with a beautiful feature wall, a luxuriously made bed, a freestanding bathtub and fresh flowers in every room.
How would you feel in this space?
I would feel, joyous, relaxed and probably a little sexy.
See, that’s the power of your home decor style, it can transform the way you think, behave and feel.
Now, for fun, let’s look at the flip side. Your husband brings you to a 3-star motel with beige sheets on the bed, an old rug on the floor and bad lighting. How would you feel in this space?
I’ll speak for myself when I say I would NOT feel sexy, NOT feel joyous or comfortable.
This is the power of our environment.
Now, select your home decor style.
If you determine that you want to feel relaxed, peaceful and blissful perhaps you should consider a home decor style that incorporates minimal clutter, soft muted colours and plants. The home decor styles I would consider would be; japandi, minimalism and modern Scandinavian.
If you determine that you want to feel inspired, energetic and artistic in your home you should consider a home decor style that incorporates bold artwork, bright colours and funky shapes. The home decor styles I would consider would be; eclectic, contemporary and grandmillennial.
If you want to feel on-trend, joyous and collected in your home you should consider a decor style that incorporates meaningful artwork, the latest trends and modern accents. The home decor styles I would consider would be; organic modern, contemporary and industrial.
Those are just some common feelings that people look to find within their homes.
Another point I would like to make is that you can certainly intermix home decor styles! Undoubtedly, you can have a space that is industrial and also eclectic or contemporary and also transitional. It’s all about how you mix the elements and balance the space to create your own unique home decor style.
