Your home is your sanctuary, and keeping it well-maintained is key to ensuring it stays comfortable, safe, and beautiful. Regular home maintenance and a solid cleaning routine can prevent costly repairs, extend the life of your appliances and systems, and create a healthier living environment. Whether you’re a seasoned homeowner or new to the game, these tips will help you stay on top of your home maintenance and cleaning tasks.
As a designer, I love cleaning, decluttering and organizing. It makes me feel on top of my game. I’ve trained myself to be organized and clean. This means I have a regular cleaning schedule and try to be tidy when performing tasks (which is challenging for me when cooking). However, since being this way, there is no going back. I cannot feel good in my space unless it is clean and tidy. So, I wanted to start with my tips for maintaining a clean home.
When it comes to home maintenance, I’ve realized this is something that you can’t skip. It’s easy to let things go, only to realize that poor home maintenance will come back and bite you. With homes that have not been properly maintained, I come to realize that you can help them up and down, but they will still look unsightly. A fresh paint job can go a long away.
Home Maintenance and Cleaning Tips
1. Create a Seasonal Home Maintenance Checklist
Seasonal changes bring different challenges and opportunities for home maintenance. Here’s a breakdown of key tasks to tackle throughout the year:
- Spring:
- Inspect your roof for damage from winter storms, and clean out gutters.
- Check the exterior of your home for cracks or signs of wear and tear.
- Service your HVAC system to ensure it’s ready for warmer weather.
- Clean and inspect windows, screens, and doors; consider adding weather stripping if needed.
- Summer:
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries as needed.
- Check your home’s insulation and add more if necessary.
- Inspect and maintain outdoor spaces, like patios and decks; re-seal wood surfaces if needed.
- Clean and check your home’s ventilation system, including kitchen and bathroom fans.
- Fall:
- Prepare your home for colder weather by servicing your heating system.
- Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent clogs from fallen leaves.
- Inspect and clean your chimney and fireplace if you have one.
- Check for drafts around windows and doors, and apply caulk or weather stripping as needed.
- Winter:
- Test your home’s electrical system, and replace any faulty outlets or switches.
- Inspect plumbing for any leaks or potential freezing points, and insulate pipes if needed.
- Check your attic and basement for signs of moisture or mould.
- Clear snow and ice from walkways, driveways, and roofs to prevent accidents and damage.
2. Adopt a Regular Cleaning Routine
A clean home is not just about aesthetics—it’s about health and longevity. Establish a regular cleaning routine to keep your home looking great and functioning well.
- Daily Tasks:
- Wipe down kitchen countertops, sinks, and appliances after use.
- Sweep or vacuum high-traffic areas to prevent dirt buildup.
- Tidy up living spaces by putting away clutter and straightening cushions.
- Weekly Tasks:
- Clean bathrooms thoroughly, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and showers.
- Dust surfaces, including shelves, furniture, and electronics.
- Mop floors and vacuum carpets to remove dirt and allergens.
- Change bed linens and wash them with hot water.
- Monthly Tasks:
- Clean your refrigerator and freezer, and dispose of expired items.
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and air vents.
- Wipe down baseboards, doors, and door frames.
- Wash windows and clean window treatments, like curtains or blinds.
- Seasonal Tasks:
- Deep clean carpets and rugs to remove embedded dirt.
- Clean and inspect your washing machine and dishwasher to prevent buildup.
- Declutter and reorganize closets, drawers, and storage areas.
- Wash or replace air filters in your HVAC system to maintain air quality.
3. Use Natural Cleaning Solutions
Switching to natural cleaning solutions can be a healthier option for your family and better for the environment. Here are some simple DIY recipes using common household ingredients:
- All-Purpose Cleaner:
- Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
- Add a few drops of essential oil for a pleasant scent.
- Use it to clean countertops, sinks, and other surfaces.
- Glass Cleaner:
- Combine 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of white vinegar, and 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
- Spray on windows and mirrors, then wipe with a microfiber cloth for streak-free shine.
- Bathroom Scrub:
- Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with liquid castile soap to form a paste.
- Use it to scrub sinks, tubs, and tile grout.
- Wood Polish:
- Mix 1/4 cup of olive oil with 1/4 cup of white vinegar.
- Apply a small amount to a cloth and polish wooden furniture.
4. Don’t Forget About Your Appliances
Your appliances work hard to keep your home running smoothly, so give them some love with regular maintenance:
- Refrigerator: Vacuum the coils every six months to keep it running efficiently.
- Dishwasher: Clean the filter and run a cleaning cycle with white vinegar to remove buildup.
- Oven: Use the self-cleaning feature, or scrub with a baking soda paste and water.
- Washer and Dryer: Clean the lint trap after every use, and wash the drum with a vinegar cycle to prevent odours.
5. Stay Organized with a Maintenance Calendar
A maintenance calendar is a great way to stay on top of tasks and avoid feeling overwhelmed. You can create a simple spreadsheet or use a digital app to schedule regular reminders for home maintenance and cleaning tasks. This will help you keep track of what needs to be done and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
