With AI taking over the world, naturally, I was intrigued to test out some of the interior design AI products on the market. The thought of making my job easier sounds lovely, I mean, we all want tools to make our jobs and lives easier, right?
I have already written about Will Interior Designers Be Replaced By AI? A Designer’s Perspective, and my consensus is that designers will use these tools to their advantage, but AI will not and cannot replace designers.
What is interior design AI?
Interior Design AI, or Interior Design Artificial Intelligence, refers to the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in the field of interior design to streamline and enhance various aspects of the design process. It leverages advanced algorithms, machine learning, and data analysis to assist users in creating more efficient, creative, and personalized interior spaces.
What can interior design AI do?
- Space Planning and Layout Optimization: AI can analyze room dimensions and suggest optimal layouts based on functional requirements and aesthetic preferences. It helps maximize the use of available space while ensuring a harmonious design.
- Style and Aesthetic Recommendations: Interior Design AI can recommend design styles, colour palettes, furniture, and decor choices tailored to an individual’s or a project’s specific preferences and requirements.
- Furniture and Decor Selection: AI tools can suggest furniture and decor items that complement the design, considering factors like room size, style, and budget.
- Material and Texture Suggestions: AI can recommend materials, textures, and finishes for walls, floors, and other surfaces that align with the desired design style and functionality.

- Environmental Sustainability: AI can recommend sustainable and eco-friendly design choices, such as energy-efficient materials and appliances, promoting environmentally conscious interior design.
Virtual room visualizations: my test runs and results
In this blog, I test out interior design AI virtual room visualizations. The reason I chose to test room visualizations (aka 3D renderings) is because 3D renderings take eons to create. Any designer reading this post is probably nodding their head in agreement. Creating 3D renderings is very tedious and takes HOURS on end. I mean seriously, it’s something that I dread. So if there is an interior design AI out there that can take this pain away – I’m sold.
So, I tested out 5 interior design AI virtual room visualization features to see what kind of ideas the AI came up with. Also, judging how realistic and good these visualizations came to be.
For the purpose of my experiment, I used some photos of a room that I am actually currently decorating.
Now, these photos really are not good. Lol, I tend to suck at taking my “before” photos. However, I thought maybe this would actually challenge the AI more.
My sample test of 5 interior design AIs
Collov.ai
The first interior design AI I tested out was Collov.ai. Collov strictly offers virtual room visualizations, aka 3D renders. Their program features style choice, colour choice, AI customization and partial modification. It’s easy to use and pretty basic. Here is what Collov came up with for the space. I inputted the style to be Scandinavian, which will be the style request for all my renderings.
Overall, I think Collov’s redesign of the space is pretty good. I do question why the AI did not include matching nightstands or cushions on the bed. But, I don’t hate it and it looks quite good if you don’t look too closely. The design is nothing mind-blowing, to me, it looks like a typical hotel room that’s been done a million times.
I’m not completely sold on Collov simply because I found the website to be a bit glitchy. Plus they price on a credit basis, meaning you need to continually buy credits on a monthly basis and every revision to your rendering will cost you credits. As a designer, I know it might take many revisions to really land on the final design, so this charging method might turn out to be overly expensive.
HomeDesigns.ai
The second interior design AI I tried out is HomeDesigns.ai. This interior design AI tool is very similar to Collov, it offers virtual room visualization. Depending on your subscription will depend on the features. I tried out the Pro subscription which honestly did not give me many options/tools, but it was comparable to the features that Collov offered. Truthfully, I did not feel confident in purchasing the Premium subscription as I wasn’t really all that impressed by the Pro version.
I prompted the AI to decorate this room in a Scandinavian style once again. Honestly, this room looks pretty lacklustre to me. I played around a little with different styles and I found that the AI didn’t generate up to my standards. I mean, the AI did not even put a comforter on the bed.
SpacePlannerai.com
Space Planner AI is a super basic and easy-to-use interior design AI. You can only achieve virtual room visualizations with this website. There are minimal options with this AI so I’d say it’s really just to generate ideas, no custom designs.
I plugged in Scandinavian design once again and here is what I got. I find it strange that the AI changed the dimensions of the photo used. With that aside, I am not overly impressed with the decor either. It seems a bit cluttered and the artwork seems pretty random. At least this AI put cushions on the bed.
REimagineHome.ai
REimagineHome is another basic room generator AI. It is very similar to Collov in terms of their pricing, they also use a credit system. What sets ReimagineHome to be different is that it also renders exterior photos as well. I found this AI super easy to use and the website was not glitchy.
Here is what ReimagineHomeAI came up with when I prompted it to design the room in a Scandinavian style (and no I was not going to pay for the image to be watermark-free, lol). Honestly, this one was a total failure. It does not look Scandinavian at all and it just looks incomplete.
HomeVisualizerAI.ai
Home Visualizer AI is a super useful interior design tool that offers a variety of rendering options. One standout feature is its Style Fusion function, which allows you to match the style of a reference photo to your own space. It can even turn hand-drawn sketches into realistic renderings, and you can make custom requests for personalized designs. I was really excited about this AI (especially the hand-drawn sketch to render feature) so I took a deep dive into this AI and wrote an extensive review: I Tried the Best 3D Room Visualizer AI, Here is my Review.
Home Visualizer AI came up with this when prompted to create a Scandinavian bedroom. This looks like a vignette from an Ikea bedroom. That being said, this AI killed it.
Interior Design AI Promo Code!!
Graciously enough, www.homevisualizer.ai offered my readers 15% off their subscription by using code DEE15 at checkout.
PromeAI
PromeAI is the last interior design AI I decided to give a go (fatigue kicked in). This site offers different types of AI, including sketch rendering which I will be testing out next. The site is pretty basic and so are the options for the render. However, they do offer quite a lot of interior design styles to choose from.
This is what I got when I prompted the AI to create a Scandinavian space. I am not too impressed considering the AI added a random window and a strange light fixture in the middle of nowhere.
In conclusion – the best and the worst interior design AI
After spending an afternoon playing with all these interior design AIs, I’ve come to realize that this technology is still too new to produce the quality of renders that I as a designer am looking for. I think these AI tools may be more helpful for someone who wants to start a DIY project and wants some type of inspiration (and isn’t too picky). But for a designer like me, I am very intentional when I show a render to a client. So, the render has to be very specific and accurate. So, I don’t think these AIs will replace my SketchUP just yet.
The best interior design AI
The winners of this experiment were Home Visualizer AI and Collov.
I think Home Visualizer AI had the best output, even though it was a little predictable. Overall, I love the functions that this AI offers. Also, the Home Visualizer team is AWESOME and gave my readers 15% off their subscription by using code DEE15 at checkout www.homevisualizer.ai. I believe this AI tool would be of great value for Home Flippers, Real Estate Agents, Home Staggers, Artists, etc.
Full Home Visualizer AI review here: I Tried the Best 3D Room Visualizer AI, Here is my Review.
Collov AI gets some brownie points for being a little more creative and I think the render looks impressive (if you don’t look too hard). I think the website is easy to use and I am curious to see how advanced the AI can get on a paid plan.
The worst interior design AI
Honestly, I was not too impressed by most of them. But I think REimagineHome really missed the mark style-wise.
However, I do acknowledge how advanced this technology is and I know there is plenty of room for improvement. I am truly excited about that!
