Interior styling is the cherry on top in the interior design process. Without styling the space, the room just won’t feel complete. Styling can actually completely transform a space’s style. It’s kind of like the accessories to an outfit. How you accessorize can completely change the look. As a designer, I naturally understand the power of styling. This is the reason why it’s impossible for me to call a piece of decor or furniture ugly. In my eyes, no piece is ugly, it just has to be styled right. You gotta have some style to really see the vision for every and any piece.
In the world of interior design, the concept of beauty is subjective and ever-evolving. What may be considered unattractive or outdated to one person can be transformed into something stylish and appealing with the right approach to styling.
In this blog post, we’ll explore how the art of styling items can change our perception of what is ugly or not, particularly in terms of furniture and decor.
The influence of interior styling
It’s often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and nowhere is this more evident than in interior design. The way we style our homes plays a significant role in how we perceive the objects within them. Take, for example, a vintage armchair with outdated upholstery and worn-out fabric. On its own, it may appear drab and unappealing. However, with the right styling approach – such as adding a colourful throw pillow, a cozy blanket, and a stylish side table – the armchair can be transformed into a focal point of the room, oozing with charm and character.
Similarly, decor items that may seem mundane or unremarkable can become visually striking when thoughtfully styled. A collection of mismatched vases or thrifted knick-knacks, when arranged thoughtfully on a shelf or mantel, can create an eclectic and visually stimulating display that adds personality to a space.
The key to interior styling: playing with contrast and composition
One of the keys to successful styling is understanding the principles of contrast and composition. By juxtaposing different elements – such as mixing textures, colours, and shapes – we can create visual interest and depth in our interiors. For example, pairing a sleek, modern coffee table with a rustic, reclaimed wood accent can create a dynamic contrast that adds character to a living room. Likewise, paying attention to composition – the arrangement and placement of objects within a space – can make a significant difference in how we perceive them. A cluttered and haphazardly arranged room can feel chaotic and overwhelming, while a thoughtfully curated space with carefully placed decor items can feel harmonious and inviting.
Embracing imperfection in interiors
Earlier this year, I wrote about the interior design trends I believe to emerge in full-force in 2024. One trend we see emerging is embracing imperfect, homey spaces and moving away from picture-perfect interiors. Read Home Trends In 2024, A Big Shift In Interior Design.
In our quest for perfection, we often overlook the beauty of imperfection. Vintage pieces with signs of wear and tear, handmade ceramics with irregular shapes, or furniture with patina and character – these are all elements that add warmth and authenticity to a space. By embracing imperfection and celebrating the unique qualities of each piece, we can create interiors that feel lived-in and inviting.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure
We’ve all heard the saying; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And you know what shows me how true this saying is? Facebook Marketplace. Go onto FBMP and take a look at what home items people are giving away and selling for super cheap. Typically, it’s items that are outdated and/or weird. I find things like pink chairs, weird artwork and beaten-up furniture. I think most people have a look on there and are unable to see the potential for any piece, which makes them run to Wayfair.com and buy a grey chair instead of the funky patterned one.
You see, I’ve always seen the potential in things. However, sometimes, the potential does not pan out, which, is why I am single.
But, I’d say I am much better at estimating the potential in furniture pieces than men. Which is why I am a designer and not a matchmaker.
Anyways, the point is, that just about anything can be styled in a way that looks good.
Let’s go back to my outfit/interior comparison for a second. You see, I’m not the best with fashion. So, if you told me you wanted to create an outfit with red pants, I might cringe a little. Because I wouldn’t grab for red pants.
But, then I see a cool outfit with red pants, and I’m like hey, I would wear that.
Turns out, red pants are kinda cool if styled right. On their own, they’re a bit of a wild card for me. Which is why I style interiors and not people.
You gotta develop your own interior style to style!
All this to say, you have to strengthen your interior design eye and get in touch with your personal style. Read What Is My Home Decor Style?
The art of styling is a powerful tool in interior design, capable of transforming the mundane into the magnificent. By understanding the principles of contrast, and composition, and embracing imperfection, we can redefine our perception of what is ugly or not in furniture and decor.
Don’t write something off simply because it is not what you would usually gravitate to. Give it a chance. Think about the space as a whole. When styling, a big mistake is to overfocus on one element. You never walk into a space and just notice one thing. Everything comes together in perfect harmony (well, it should) and the whole space is experienced as one. So, while the weird looking chair looks kinda strange on its own, it might just pair well with a simple sofa and contemporary artwork, creating a unique and interesting interior.
