As an interior design professional, a lot of my job involves keeping up with the trends. So, if I just had a crystal ball that showed me all the upcoming interior design trends my job would be a little easier.
If you know me, you know I LOVE predictions and I’m no stranger to psychics. I’ve received a handful of psychic readings in my days and while some psychics hit the nail on the head, some missed terribly. A psychic actually told me to start my blog. Seriously, lol. I was like a BLOG?! I’m dyslexic and suck at writing. But it turns out all you need is Grammarly and a sense of humor to write a blog.
So anyway, back to my predictions on the upcoming interior design trends…
When it comes to the interior design industry, the industry has evolved and changed a lot throughout the years with retailers hitting the e-commerce market and eDesign…I can’t help but wonder what the future of the interior design industry will be like and what trends will come next. So here is my list of 10 upcoming trend predictions for interior design…(without the help of a psychic).
My 10 upcoming interior design trend predictions
1. People will gravitate to a minimalism design style and a minimalist lifestyle
I think we all went through a period of time in the pandemic when we were online shopping like crazy! I can speak for myself when I say I loved looking forward to having a package come to the door at least once a day. Once all that dopamine wears off you realize that you just spent a whole lot of money on a whole load of things that all need a place in your home. It comes to a point where a lot of it just becomes clutter. A cluttered home can impact you in many ways – all negative. Because of this, I think a lot of folks are going to start decluttering and start living with very minimal things. Less sometimes really is more. This is a design trend that I can get behind and would consider it more of a lifestyle change than trend per say.
2. Formal living and dining rooms will be obsolete
As homes get smaller, gone are the days of having one purpose rooms. Traditionally, in a typical home you’d find a living room, family room, kitchen and dining room. Rooms were separated and distinguished as such to have more formal eating and seating areas and well as more casual day-to-day living areas. As peoples homes get smaller there won’t be much of an option to have these distinguished spaces. Instead, you will find one great room that will have the flexibility to seat and dine people no matter if the occasion is formal or casual.
3. Wicker furniture will make a comeback
I don’t know why but I have a feeling that wicker might be back soon. Wicker kind of fits in with the current earthy/vintage interior design trends. And I think wicker furniture reimagined could be really cool and hip. I just have a hunch. But, like I said, I’m no psychic and this is just my guess.
4. Jewel tone colours will be in
I have a gut feeling that jewel tone colours will be a huge interior design trend in the upcoming years. When I say jewel tones I’m talking emerald green, burgundy, sapphire, golden yellow…
I think people are going to start being less afraid of colour and the whole neutral colour scheme won’t be as popular as it is now. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good neutral toned space, but colour is soo fun and I think many people will want to infuse their space with rich and vibrant colours.
5. Indoor/outdoor spaces will become more common
I predict indoor/outdoor spaces will popularize especially in climates with decent weather all year. I think people in general are going to start embracing the outdoors by gardening and opting for properties with more land. So naturally, people will want to have spaces that they can entertain in and enjoy. That’s why I think indoor/outdoor spaces will become much more popular. I mean, they are incredible, who wouldn’t want one?!
6. People will create rooms for their pets
A lot of people opt to have fur babies instead of real human babies. And that’s cool. In North America dogs and cats get royal treatment. With that being said, I predict people will create dedicated rooms for their pets. Instead of using the spare bedroom for in-laws I think some people will opt to set up a pet bed and play area to keep their fur baby contained while not at home.
7. Luxury homes will have 2 primary bedroom suits
My prediction is that for those who have the funds for a luxury home, will opt to have 2 primary (aka master) bedrooms and/or 2 separate bathrooms. I’m not married but one thing I have heard from married people (I’ve heard an earful) is that having a separate space, whether that be a separate bathroom, bedroom or a “man cave” is really a game changer. I think more couples are opening up to the idea of having totally separate rooms.
There are a lot of great things about having a separate space from your spouse. You can decorate your bedroom how you like, you don’t have to deal with your spouses mess in the bathroom and it might feel more special when you guys do choose to come together and share a space. But, this is an interior design blog and not a how-to-fix-your-marriage blog. So the idea of having 2 primary suits may not be for everyone.
8. Colourful appliances will become HOT
I think people are going to start having fun with their appliances. A purple toilet or a red fridge…why not? I think within the interior design industry we certainly have “standards” and most interiors stick to those standards. Like stainless steel kitchen appliances and white toilets. These standards are limiting the possibilities within a space. Naturally, people want to see what’s new, what’s different…what has not been done before. And that’s where unique fixtures, appliances and finishing will come in to add an element of surprise and uniqueness.
9. Sunrooms will make a comeback
As you may have noticed, I think the outdoors will really make an impact on interior design trends in the years to come. I just have a feeling (and I could be totally wrong) that people will prioritize outdoor living as much as indoor living. I’ve also noticed that owning plants has grown in popularity. And with that, is my prediction that sunrooms will make a major come back. If you don’t know what a sunroom is, it’s basically a room in a home (most of the time next to the kitchen) that faces the direction of the sun and it is typically where your plants are kept. In my family home growing up we had a sunroom. It was a cute space to enjoy a drink and soak up the sun in the summer months.
10. People will stop following the interior design trends
I say this because keeping up with all the design trends leave you with a really trendy space. The issue with that is once the interior design trends change your space suddenly because a time capsule to that decade. Like, you know how between 2010-2020 everyone was obsessed with grey, grey, grey and more grey?!! Now, and in the future when you see a grey room you think “ohhh, they must have remodeled in 2010…”. I think good design should not have a timestamp, it should be timeless. My prediction is that people will get tired of following the latest trends as once some time has passed they realize that the trends they followed don’t actually reflect their true style. Hopefully, people are going to start decorating in a way that is unique to their personal style and taste.
So, there you gave it folks. My 10 interior design trend predictions. In a couple years I’m going to look back to see if any of these interior design trends came to be.
