As we reach the midpoint of 2024 (and can I just say that time is FLYING), interior trends continue to evolve, reflecting broader cultural, technological, and environmental shifts. Staying abreast of these trends is essential for me, of course (designer here), and anyone looking to refresh their space or undertake a significant redesign. Here, I will delve into the most exciting interior design trends emerging halfway through this year.
Green, green, green…interior trends 2024
Not only has the colour green seemed to sneak back into the trends, but also, green initiatives. Every designer, home builder, furniture maker, real estate developer and so on is concerned about how to create sustainably. And, I think that is great. So, how can you as a homeowner embrace and implement this trend?
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design
Sustainability is no longer a niche interest; it’s a fundamental aspect of modern interior design. Mid-year 2024 sees an increased focus on eco-friendly materials, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices.

One of the most prominent trends this year is the continued rise of biophilic design, which emphasizes the integration of natural elements into interior spaces. This trend is driven by a growing awareness of the benefits that nature brings to our well-being, including improved air quality, reduced stress, and enhanced creativity.

Maximalism: Bold and Beautiful
While minimalism has dominated the design landscape for years, maximalism is making a strong comeback. This trend is all about embracing bold colours, patterns, and eclectic decor to create spaces that are vibrant and full of personality.
I consider myself to be at the crossroads of minimalism and maximalism. That may not make sense to you, but to me, it makes perfect sense. Anyway, what I want to get at is that I really, really love a good maximal interior. There is something so charming about it. You can feel the passion inside a space like that. There is so much to look at and a story behind every piece. This trend is one I DIG!
Key Elements:
- Bold Colours: Deep blues, rich greens, and vibrant yellows are being used to make statements.
- Pattern Mixing: Combining different patterns, such as florals, geometrics, and abstracts, adds visual interest.
- Eclectic Decor: Mixing vintage and modern pieces to create unique, personalized spaces.
Multifunctional Spaces
As our lifestyles continue to evolve, so do our living spaces. The trend towards multifunctional rooms is a response to the need for homes that can adapt to various activities, from remote work to home workouts.
Key Elements:
- Flexible Furniture: Pieces like sofa beds, extendable tables, and modular seating are ideal for multifunctional spaces.
- Zoning: Creating distinct areas within a single room for different activities using rugs, partitions, or furniture arrangement.
- Home Offices: Dedicated workspaces that are both functional and stylish, with ergonomic furniture and good lighting.
Artisanal and Handcrafted Decor
In a world dominated by mass production, there’s a growing appreciation for artisanal and handcrafted items. This trend celebrates unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that bring character and authenticity to a space.

Nostalgia is powerful, and the retro revival trend taps into this by bringing back design elements from past decades. This year, mid-century modern and 1970s-inspired designs are particularly popular.
Key Elements:
- Mid-Century Modern: Clean lines, organic curves, and functional forms characterize this style.
