The artwork in your home has the power to transform a space, evoke emotion, and reflect personal style. Whether you’re a seasoned art collector or just starting to think about filling your walls, the type of art you choose can significantly influence the atmosphere of a room. In this post, we will explore the different types of artwork you could decorate your home with and how they can enhance your interior design.
For the love of God, do not style your space with a generic print of a beach that you found for 45% off at Winners. There is nothing sadder than that. It also really cheapens a space. You could spend a pretty penny on lovely furniture, but the cheap art you plastered on the walls could ruin it. I know because I’ve seen it. Recently, I took a tour of a new condominium building in Downtown Toronto, this building was offering LUXURY rental units. The place was immaculate. However, they have some generic artwork plastered throughout the common areas. And honestly, it didn’t leave my mind. I thought, they spent ALL this money on luxe tile, light fixtures and furniture only to put some boring prints on the wall…C’mon.
Art is make or break. Ditch the generic stuff you find at the discount stores and invest in artwork that will enhance your space. Let’s explore some options.
1. Original Paintings
Paintings are perhaps the most popular form of art used in home decor, offering endless possibilities in terms of style, medium, and subject matter. Here are a few types to consider:
- Traditional Paintings: Think classic landscapes, portraits, or still lifes. These works can evoke a timeless elegance and are perfect for creating a sophisticated or vintage-inspired space.
- Abstract Art: Abstract paintings can introduce a modern, dynamic feel to a room. With their bold colours, shapes, and textures, they’re perfect for making a statement in living rooms or entryways.
- Impressionist or Expressionist Art: If you want something that balances realism and abstraction, these styles offer emotional depth while remaining approachable.
Original artwork doesn’t HAVE to be expensive. You can even make your own. If you’re not artistically blessed, stick to abstract art. Even a baby could make some killer abstract art.
2. Photography
Photography is a versatile option for decorating. Whether you’re into modern black-and-white prints, nature-inspired landscapes, or even candid street shots, photographs can bring a contemporary and personal touch to your home. I think the artwork in one’s home should be personal. With photography, it’s easy to make it personal, simply, print out your own family photos or travel pics.
- Black-and-White Photography: Adds a classic and chic feel, often lending a sense of calm or nostalgia to a room.
- Landscape Photography: Ideal for bringing the outdoors in, landscape photos are great for spaces where you want to evoke tranquility and connection to nature, such as bedrooms or home offices.
- Portrait Photography: Choose powerful portraits for a striking, personal touch in living areas or hallways.
3. Wallpaper
If there’s one thing you should know about me as a designer, it’s that I LOVEEEE wallpaper. Wallpaper can be used as artwork. Especially, wallpaper that has a little more drama, like this one. There’s no need to layer wallpaper with artwork, because, it speaks for itself. But, of course, you can certainly layer wallpaper and art pieces together for a little more interest.
4. Textile Art: Tapestries, Quilts, Rugs and Macramé
Textile art offers a softer, often overlooked option for home decor. It adds texture and warmth, making it perfect for spaces that need a cozy touch.
- Tapestries: Large fabric wall hangings with intricate designs or abstract patterns can bring a Bohemian vibe to a room.
- Quilts: Beautifully designed quilts, either hanging on walls or draped over furniture, add a handcrafted, vintage charm to spaces.
- Macramé and Woven Art: These add both a tactile and visual texture and work particularly well in Boho or rustic interiors.
- Rugs: I love rugs, on the floor or the wall – doesn’t matter! Think outside the box and consider a rug on the wall as an art piece or headboard.
5. Vintage Posters and Prints: Nostalgic Charm
Vintage posters and prints offer a budget-friendly, retro option for adding a nostalgic flair to your home. From old film posters to advertisements and vintage travel prints, they can evoke a sense of history and character.
- Film and Music Posters: Perfect for media rooms, man caves, or casual living spaces where you want to highlight your personality.
- Travel Prints: These can add a vintage, wanderlust vibe to spaces like entryways, home offices, or even kitchens.
Curating Your Home Artwork Collection Should be Fun and Personal
As a designer, and also an artist, I love artwork. Now, listen, I am no Picasso, but I can paint and have completed many art endeavours throughout my career. But, this post isn’t about me and my artistic abilities, this post is for the average homeowner who is looking to decorate and wants to be intentional with the artwork on their walls.
Choosing the right type of art for your home is all about your taste and the mood you want to create in each room. Whether you’re drawn to paintings, sculptures, or photography, the art you choose can transform your space and reflect your unique style. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different types of art, either—combining various forms can add depth and richness to your decor. At the end of the day, the best art for your home is the one that resonates with you. Just, please, just stay away from the discount art section at Winners.
