Choosing the right sofa for your home is an important decision. It’s not just a piece of furniture; it’s where you’ll unwind after a long day, host gatherings with friends, and eat Cheetos. With a myriad of options available, finding the perfect sofa might seem like a daunting task. After all, sofas aren’t cheap, and it’s certainly a piece of furniture that you do not want to have to repurchase year after year.
Comfort is key and personal
As a designer, a large part of my job is to inform my clients and help them make informed (and stylish) decisions. I want to ensure that my clients purchase the right furniture pieces for their homes. Something that I always advise my clients to do when it comes to sofas is; invest and try before you buy. The reason is quite simple. Most of us spend a lot of time on our sofas. It’s the same idea when purchasing a mattress, this is something that you’ll be spending a lot of time on, so you have to make sure it’s the right fit.
Comfort is paramount when choosing a sofa. Visit furniture stores to test different styles and seating options. Pay attention to seat depth, cushion firmness, and back support. A comfortable sofa suits your personal preferences and ensures relaxation.
Comfort is pretty subjective. Some like it firm, some like it soft. It’s kind of like buttocks. Some are more firm and some are softer. Some are more boxy and some are more round. Some have some extra cushion for the pushing and some don’t. People have their preferences. So, figure out what kinda of sofa you think is comfortable.
Anyway, all uncomfortable comparisons aside…the reason why I decided to make this post is because I find that a lot of people do not buy the right sofa. And, considering my profession, I’ve helped plenty of my clients buy the right sofa. So, I figured this post might help you identify which sofa is right for you and your space.
Essential first step to ensure you make an informed and satisfying sofa purchase
Assess and plan out your space. Before you buy anything, especially furniture. You need to measure and ensure that whatever sofa you are considering, actually fits proportionally in your space. Now, there are a lot of nuances when it comes to planning where a sofa will go. But, in a nutshell, you need to plan out your whole space and ideally create a to-scale plan to ensure that everything will fit the way you envision and the flow of the space works.
When planning where your sofa will go, be sure to accommodate room on each side for end tables (which are around 9-24″ wide), you may also want room for a floor lamp or magazine stand. Be sure to identify all the elements and plan accordingly. Your sofa may not be placed against a wall, so maybe you need to make sure that there is enough clearance on either side to walk by. This is why a to-scaled plan is so handy. But, if you’re not able to create a to-scaled plan, you can easily plan out your room an old-fashioned way with some good old painter’s tape. Mark out all your furniture on the floor using a measuring tape and painter’s tape. By doing this, you will have a real sense of how much space each item will take up and if the room will be comfortable to function in.
It’s kind of crazy to me how many people buy a sofa (and other furniture pieces) without even measuring. Furniture is expensive and difficult to return, so measuring and planning is the most important step to ensuring your purchase makes sense.
After assessing, measuring and planning…
Define Your Style: Determine the overall style of your home. Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist look, a classic and timeless design, or a cozy and eclectic vibe, your sofa should align with your personal aesthetic. Explore different styles, materials, and colours that resonate with your taste and complement your existing decor.

Choose the Right Material: The material of your sofa can significantly impact its comfort, durability, price and overall aesthetic. Leather offers a sophisticated and durable option, while fabric provides a variety of textures and patterns. Consider factors like ease of cleaning, especially if you have pets or children.
Nowadays, there are so many durable fabrics to choose from, including performance fabrics. You may be living under a rock and have not heard of performance fabrics. In short, performance fabrics are fabrics with built-in liquid resistance and stain protection. They are not stainproof, however, these fabrics are very easy to clean and harder to stain. Most high-end furniture retailers offer performance fabric options.

Budget, but don’t skimp on quality when it comes to your sofa
A favourite saying of mine is; that you get what you pay for. It’s right 99% of the time. Sofas are no different. Earlier in this post, I wrote about why you should invest in your sofa. In short, it’s an important piece that you will use daily. So, in my opinion, sofas are not the piece you want to cheap out on. Go a little cheaper with the other elements in the room and invest in upholstery that will last.
Evaluate Construction Quality: A well-constructed sofa ensures longevity. Look for sturdy frames made from materials like hardwood, high-resilient foam cushions, and reinforced joints. Check the quality of upholstery stitching and the overall craftsmanship of the piece. Take the time to read reviews and gather insights from other buyers. Research reputable brands known for quality and customer satisfaction. This step is crucial in making an informed decision and ensuring your investment is worthwhile.
Buying a sofa is a significant decision, but armed with these tips, you can confidently navigate the process. Remember to prioritize comfort, style, and quality to find the perfect sofa that not only complements your living space but also enhances your overall lifestyle. Happy sofa shopping!
